An overview of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act, 2016, how to report online harassment and fraud, and how businesses can reduce risk.
What PECA covers
The Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act, 2016 (PECA) is Pakistan’s main cybercrime law. It covers offences such as unauthorised access to information systems, electronic fraud and forgery, cyberstalking and the misuse of a person’s identity or images.
If you are a victim
Preserve evidence before anything is deleted: take screenshots, save links and keep messages. Complaints can then be made to the relevant investigating agency. A lawyer can help you prepare the complaint and follow it through.
For businesses
Businesses should know what personal data they hold, who can access it and how it is protected. Clear internal policies and staff training reduce both the risk of an incident and the legal exposure if one happens.
